A large part of Insight is independent study. Everyday I will be reading many different books for several hours. This will be followed by a discussion time with all the other students. Insight focuses on humanities, worldviews, the Bible, and communications. I am really excited about the integration of these different subjects together.
Already I have started reading two books in preparation for Insight. The first is Love God with All Your Mind: The Role of Reason in the Life of the Soul by J.P. Moreland. As a thinker myself I am really enjoying this book. It expresses many of the issues I have had with the modern church and brings to light new ideas and information that will be quite helpful in getting us out of the current mindless rut.
The other book is is The Universe Next Door: A Basic Worldview Catalog by James W. Sire. So far I have only read the first chapter and started the second, but I find this a pretty easy read on worldviews. Far simpler than Understanding the Times by David Nobel. If you are looking for an good introduction to different worldviews this would be a great book.

Wow! That is a lot of books! One of the things I like about Insight is just because I will be reading certain book doesn't mean I have to agree with them. The point is to think about the main concepts and ideas presented in the books and through discussion come to my own conclusion regarding what I believe. And, hopefully by then be able to articulate what it is and why I believe it.

ReplyDeleteLooks like a challenging but exciting book list. If you haven't read Mortimer Adler's book titled "How to read a book" I have a great little synopisis of how to mark an book to retain what you've read and be able to find it again later. Let me know if you want a copy.
I'm excited for you but also sad because I know we're going to miss you.
Spunky, I would like that synopsis. I think it would help very much. I already like to mark-up my books, but if I can learn to do it better that would be great!
